How Parents Can Help Before the Appointment

Parents play a huge role in setting the tone for dental visits:

  • Brush and rub your finger on your child’s gums or rub with a wet washcloth before the first teeth come in so they’re used to touch before teething soreness begins
  • Avoid using dental visits as a threat as dentists are here to help, not punish
  • Never warn children about “drills,” “shots,” or “numbing” ahead of time. If you want to explain use better words like “watersprayer”, “small pinch that will make the tooth and lip take a nap” 
  • Trust the dental team to guide the experience in a calm, positive way
  • Bring your child to the dentist at 3 yrs old. Ideally well before they have a toothache and have lost sleep due to it. 

Extra Support When Needed

For some children, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can be helpful. It lowers anxiety and makes time feel like it goes faster, but it is important to agree to this prior to a teary child as it works best before tears begin and when little noses are clear.

We also provide parents with a helpful letter before a child’s first filling, explaining what to discuss with your child and what not to so that expectations stay positive and consistent with the words we use.
